RC Sproul Recounts How He Became a Calvinist

RC Sproul attributes it to Romans 9:

The combination was too much for me. Gerstner, Edwards, the New Testament professor, and above all the Apostle Paul, were too formidable a team for me to withstand. The ninth chapter of Romans was the clincher. I simply could find no way to avoid the Apostle’s teaching in that chapter. Reluctantly, I sighed and surrendered, but with my head, not my heart. “OK, I believe this stuff, but I don’t have to like it!”

  1. I read a book by R.C. Sproul about 35 years ago – before I knew the difference between a Calvinist and a Arminian. My opinion of him then was that he was confused. I have not changed my mind. Calvinism and Arminianism are both wrong. The truth is Universalism.

He is claiming Paul would be a Calvinist? Really? How can one read Paul and come to that conclusion?

    1. Dear Randy: I am a former United Methodist, now a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.God has given us the ability to choose salvation in Christ or not.None of us are predestinated to be saved or not, each person is free to choose. We can repent, come to our senses and trust Christ for salvation or we can choose rebellion and darkness. Another doctrine we teach is that mercy in Christ can extend to those who have died, with no understanding of the plan of salvation,if they are willing to be taught, repent and come to faith in the Savior, even after death. This includes all little children who have died before the age of accountability, regardless of when or where they lived in the past. The atonement or sacrifice of our Savior covers all such children, and they are heirs of salvation. This doctrine is the very definition of grace! Think of it! Millions and millions of innocent little souls are redeemed by kindness. The Holy Bible and Book of Mormon have one purpose and that is to offer you and I the chance of salvation in Christ regardless of our past. All may come, none are going to be cast away, if they choose to come by faith.I hope this sheds another perspective on this important issue.Yours in Christ, Dan.

  2. RC was one of the greatest apologists in History and his thoughts go way deeper than most people can fathom.

  3. Spurgeon also was a Calvinist. So even though my mind cannot understand, I have to stop and realize that these great Bible apologists must know much more than I. Like God’s word says, “His ways are not our ways, and who can understand the mind of the Lord, or who has been His counselor?” Just because I don’t understand it, doesn’t mean it’s not true.

  4. I was once a United Methodist, and never embraced Calvin’s doctrine.I have been a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, since 1980.We do not teach that some are destined for heaven or the abyss, regardless of what they do.We are free to choose captivity or death, or we may come to faith in Christ repent, and make covenants with God,and be sustained in our journey through grace. The Lord wishes to extend mercy to all who wish to step forward in faith..This grace also extends to all of those who have died, who would have accepted the plan of salvation if they had lived when it was available to them. All such souls will be given the opportunity to repent, come to faith in Christ, and obey any other requirements asked of them. ALL little children are redeemed, who died before the age of accountability, the mercy of the Savior covers all such souls, regardless of when or where they lived upon the earth, the little 1 year old who died today or the toddler in in Egypt 5,000 years in the past, all are alike unto God and will have a seat at the table of grace at some future day, as will all who approached the throne of grace, made possible through Christ and Him alone.
