Gen 2:19 Out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to Adam to see what he would call them. And whatever Adam called each living creature, that was its name.
Gen 2:19 Out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to Adam to see what he would call them. And whatever Adam called each living creature, that was its name.
I know that most discussion of this text focuses on ‘to see what he would call them’ and argues over whether God knew what names Adam would give. However, the operative part of the verse is surely the following: ‘And whatever Adam called each living creature, that was its name.’
Surely, there is only one way to interpret this? – The *sole determining factor* in the naming of each animal was Adam’s choice. This has a similar force to Genesis 1:3 ‘Let there be light’ – and there was light. So, whatever man called the animals, that was their name. I feel sure readers can draw their own conclusions from this.
